View this email in your browser Announcing the 2025 Mellon Foundation Subgrant Award Recipients We are excited to announce the recipients of PA CHEP’s 2025 subgrants, made possible through generous support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. This funding supports colleges and universities expanding higher education in prison across Pennsylvania, with an emphasis on equity, reentry, and long-term infrastructure. After a competitive review process, seven projects were selected for support, each reflecting the depth of innovation and commitment across our network. Each project reflects our shared commitment to student-centered, high-impact programming, and showcases the depth of innovation and dedication across our network. 2025 Subgrant Recipients Bucks County Community College Bucks County Community College will launch one of Pennsylvania’s first fully asynchronous prison education programs at Bucks County Correctional Facility, offering credit-bearing courses and certificates in business, entrepreneurship, and digital skills. Johnson College Johnson College will pilot a workforce training program at Wayne County Prison and other northeastern PA sites, which will deliver OSHA 10 certification to incarcerated students, paired with reentry-focused curriculum development and community partnerships. Muhlenberg College Muhlenberg College will expand Inside-Out courses at Lehigh County Jail and launch a reentry-focused Think Tank that brings together system-impacted leaders, community members, and students to collaboratively explore justice, education, and civic engagement. Saint Joseph’s University Saint Joseph’s University will deepen its longstanding Inside-Out programming at SCI Chester by adding pre-college workshops in writing, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy, while training new faculty and centering system-impacted leadership in program design. University of Pennsylvania The University of Pennsylvania will partner with formerly incarcerated educators to deliver five certificate-bearing reentry workshops at SCI Chester, incorporating digital tools to support participants in preparing for their return to the community. University of Scranton The University of Scranton will continue its accredited associate degree program at SCI Dallas, offering three more terms of credit-bearing instruction with full-time faculty, advising, and pathways for post-release degree completion. West Virginia University West Virginia University, in partnership with Waynesburg University and the Appalachian Prison Book Project, will expand its degree program at SCI Greene, while also developing reentry guides, mentorship initiatives, and training for system-impacted educators. We celebrate the bold and thoughtful work these institutions are leading, and we look forward to the opportunities these projects will create for students across the Commonwealth.
